गण gaṇa, vulg. gaṇ, s.m. Flock, troop, company, host, multitude, number, series; genus; group, class, category; tribe, sect, party;—troops or classes of inferior deities (esp. certain troops of demigods considered as Śiva's attendants and under the special superintendence of the god Gaṇeśa);—a small body of troops, consisting of three gulmas (i.e. twenty-seven chariots, twenty-seven elephants, eighty-one horse, and one hundred and thirtyfive foot);—a series or group of asterisms or lunar mansions classed under three heads (that of the gods, that of men, and that of the Rākshasas or demons);—(in Arith.) a number;—(in Prosody) a division of time (=30 kasṭhasor about eight seconds); a measure of four instants or short syllables;—(in Gram.) a series of roots or words belonging to the same rule and called after the first word of the series (e.g. ad-ādi, the Gaṇa ad, etc., or the whole series of roots of the second class);—(gaṇis not unfrequently used as an affix to form plurals, e.g. tārā-gaṇ, The starry host, the stars):—gaṇ-pati, vulg. gaṇ-pat, s.m. 'Lord of the inferior deities,' an epithet of Gaṇeś;—a proper name:—gaṇ-dravya, s.m. Public property; common stock;—a variety of articles:—gaṇ-rāj, or gaṇ-rā`ū, s.m.=gaṇ-pati, q.v.:—gaṇ-log, s.m. pl. The classes of demigods or inferior deities who are the attendants of Śiva (see gaṇ):—gaṇ-nāyak, s.m. The leader or chief of the attendants of any god; the chief of Śiva's attendants, the god Gaṇeśa:—gaṇ-nidhān, s.m. 1˚= gaṇ-pati:—2˚corr. of guṇ-nidhān, q.v.:—gaṇeśa, vulg. gaṇes, gaṇes (gaṇa+ īśa), s.m. lit.'Lord or chief of the troops' (of inferior deities; see gaṇ); name of the son of Śiva and Pārvatī(he is the god of wisdom, and the remover of obstacles; hence he is invoked at the commencement of all undertakings, literary composition, etc. Most Hindūliterary compositions begin with the phrase śrī-gaṇeśāya-namah, 'reverence to the divine Gaṅeś);—a name of the god Śiva;—a proper name (of men):—gaṇeś-ćauth, s.f. A Hindūfestival observed in honour of Ganeśon the fourth of Aghan:—gobar-ganeś, s.m. 'A cow-dung image of Ganeś'; a fat dullard;—a lubberly fellow; an arrant fool.
