पुऽ putra, putr, vulg. putar, puttar, s.m. Son, child (syn. beṭā, laṛkā):—putrārthī(putra+ar˚), adj. & s.m. Desirous of a son;—one who wishes for a son:—putra-bhāv, s.m. The being a son, the state or condition of a son, sonship:—putra-pautrī, s.m. One who has children and grandchildren:—putra-pautrīṇ, adj. Descended from son to son; hereditary:—putra-jīv, s.m. lit. 'Giving life to children'; the tree Putranjiwa Roxburghii (from the fruit of which necklaces are made, supposed to be of prolific efficacy, and when worn by children to keep them in good health):—putra-śreṇī, s.f. lit. 'Having a row of offspring, i.e. offshoots and suckers'; the plant Salvinia cucullata:—putra-kāmyā, s.f. Wish for sons or children, love of offspring:—putra-vān, putra-vant, adj. & s.m.
