वणर् varṇ, and H. वरण varaṇ, वरन varan, s.m. Colour, hue; class, etc. (i.q. barṇor baran, q.v.);—form, figure;—dress, embellishment; theatrical dress;—the fineness or purity of gold (as ascertained by its streak on the touchstone);—fresh earth carried into hollows by means of water:—varṇāśram (˚ṇa+āś˚), s.m. Caste and order, class and stage of life; the status of a given class of society:—varṇāśramā, s.m. pl. The four Hindūcastes (viz. Brāhman, Kshatriya, Vaiśya, and Śūdra);—the four states of Hindūsociety (viz. Student, Householder, Mendicant, and Anchoret):—varṇāśramī, adj.
