نجف

najaf (v.n. fr. نجف 'to hew out,' etc.), s.m. High ground (to which water does not reach); a high ridge in the middle of a channel left dry by the stream;—a hill, hillock, tumulus, etc.;—name of a place in which is the tomb of 'Alī.
