mahr (inf. n. of مہر 'to contract, or engage by writing, to make a settlement on a wife'), s.m. Contracting by writing, to make a settlement on a wife;—a marriage-portion, or gift, settled upon the wife before marriage; dowry, jointure, alimony:—mahr bāṅdhnā(-kā?), To settle a portion (on a wife):—mahr baḵẖshnā(-kā), To give up a jointure:—mahrkādawākarnā, To claim a marriage-portion.
