मार mār (fr. mār-nā, q.v.), s.f. Beating, striking;—a beating, a blow, stroke; punishment; affliction;—battle; a firing (at), cannonading, bombarding;—a rushing upon, a crowding round;—plunder, extortion, exaction;—cure, remedy (e.g. khūjlī-kīmār ghīhai);—lure, temptation, snare;—a kind of stiff clay or loamy soil with sand and vegetable mould; a rich black soil:—mār paṛnā(-par), A beating (or punishment) to fall (upon); to be beaten:—mār-pīṭ, mār-piṭā`ī, mār-dhār, or mār-kuṭā`ī, s.f. Beating and bruising; assault and battery; fight, affray, struggle:—mār denā(-ko), To give a beating (to), to beat, to smite:—mār-kuṭā`ī, s.f. = mār-pīṭ, q.v.:—mār-kuṭiyā, adj. & s.m.
