माथ māth[Prk. मत्थं; S. मःतं ], = H ماتھا माथा māthā[Prk. मत्थअं; S. मःतकं], s.m. The head; the forehead; the top or upper part (of anything); summit;—ridge (of thatch); prow (of a boat; syn. galahī):—māthābhaṛaknā, v.n. The head to throb; to have a headache:—māthāpiṭṭan karnā, or māthāpīṭnā, To beat the head (in despair, or in making strenuous effort); to make strenuous effort, to labour hard (for):—māthā ṭikānā, 'To fix the head' (on the ground), to prostrate oneself:—māthā ṭhanaknā, 'The head to ring or throb'; to have a presentiment of evil with respect to anyone, or any affair (from anything observed or heard):—māthāragaṛnā, To rub the forehead (on the ground); to supplicate, implore humbly (of the Deity, or a saint, or a king, etc.):—māthākūṭnā, To beat the head (in sorrow or despair):—māthāgodnā(-kā), To tattoo the forehead (esp. of a slave, or a life-prisoner):—māthe-par ćaṛhnā(-ke), 'To mount on the head' (of); to take advantage (of), impose (upon), take liberties (with), to be rude or insolent (to); to tyrannize (over), to oppress (syn. sir ćaṛhnā):—māthe mārnā, To strike on the head (of, -ke); to beat the head; to rack the brains, make strenuous efforts, etc. (=sir mārnā):—ūṅćāmāthā, A high forehead.
