sajjāda (for A. سجادة sajjādat; see sajjād), s.m. A carpet or mat on which a Mohammadan prostrates himself (and stands and sits) in prayer; place of adoration; mosque; altar:—sajjāda-nishīn, s.m. lit.'Sitting upon the prayer-carpet'; a Mohammadan priest (when saying prayers); any religious ascetic of the Mohammadan faith;—the spiritual superior of a mosque or religious endowment (as distinguished from the Mutawallīor secular superintendent).
