ra`īyat, vulg.ra`aiyat, raiyat (for A. رعیة , v.n. fr. رعی 'to pasture; to tend,' etc.), s.f. A subject; subjects, people; tenant; cultivator, peasant; follower, dependant:—ra`īyat-āzār, adj. & s.m. Subject-oppressing, tyrannous;—an oppressor, a tyrant:—ra`īyatparwar, s.m. Cherisher or protector of subjects, or tenants, etc.; a benevolent sovereign or landlord:—ra`īyat-parwarī, s.f. Protection of subjects, kind treatment of tenants or dependants, etc.:—ra`īyat-nawāz, s.m.=ra`īyatparwar:—ra`īyat-nawāzī, s.f.=ra`īyatparwarī:—ra`īyat-wārī, adj. By or with individual cultivators;—s.f. The ra`īyatwārisystem (see next):—ra`īyat-wārīfaiṣla, Settlement of land-rents, etc. made with the cultivators themselves without the intervention of a zamīndāror landlord (com. known as the Ryotwary system).
