दगर् ु dur-ga, vulg. durg (dur, prefix+ga), adj. & s.m. (f. -ā), Difficult of access or approach, almost impassable or inaccessible, impenetrable, impervious; difficult of attainment, unattainable;—a difficult or narrow passage over a stream, or a mountain, or through a wood, etc.; a defile, narrow pass; a place difficult of access, a crag, a hill-fort, castle, fort, fortress, stronghold;—name of an Asur (supposed to have been slain by the goddess Durgā, and from whom, according to some, she received her name):—durgādhikārī(˚ga+adh˚), and durgādhyaksh (˚ga+adh˚), s.m. The governor or commandant of a fortress:—durgāśrayan (˚ga+aś˚), s.m. Taking refuge in a fortress:—durg-karm, s.m. Difficult work; a difficult undertaking;—fortification:—durgvaṅśī, adj. & s.m. Appertaining to the race of Durg;—name of a tribe of Rājpūts.
