to,e, or Arabic tā(called tā`ě-mǒhmala or tā`ě-gair-manqūta), the twenty-second letter of the Urdū alphabet (the sixteenth letter of the Arabic, from which it is taken). The letter is purely Arabic or Semitic; but it is sometimes used in certain Persian words for an original ت te (e.g. tabar-zad for tabar-zad, 'sugar-candy'). In Arabic it is a strongly articulated palatal t; but in Hindūstānīand Persian its sound is hardly distinguishable from that of تte. As a numeral it stands for 9; and in almanacs it represents the sign Capricorn. In Urdūmanuscripts it is commonly used instead of the four dots or points over the letters ٹ a, ڈ a, and ڑ a (e.g. ٹetc.).
