ād, or wād (called ād-ě-mǒ`jama, or ād-ě-manqūta), is the twenty-first letter of the Urdū alphabet (the fifteenth of the Arabic, from which it is taken);—it occurs only in words borrowed from the Arabic and the secondary formations therefrom. In Hindūstānī(and Persian) it is pronounced like ز z; but in Arabic it is a strongly articulated palatal d. As a numeral it denotes 800.
