चण्डा ćaṇḍā, s.f. A passionate or furious woman; a name of the goddess Durgā(applied especially to her incarnation for the purpose of destroying the Asuror demon Mahesh. This exploit forms the subject of a section of the Mārkaṇḍeya-purāna, and is particularly celebrated in Bengal at the Durgā-pūjā, or festival held in honour of this goddess in the month `Aswin, Sept.-Oct.).
