mutawassil (act. part. of توسّل 'to strive to recommend oneself' (to), etc., v of وسل , not in use; prob. formed from wasīla, q.v.), act. part. Studious of obtaining nearness or access (to), endeavouring to recommend oneself to the notice and favour (of,—esp. of God); trusting (in God); confiding (in), relying (on);—adjoining, conjoined;—s.m. An intercessor, a mediator;—one who confides in, or relies upon;—a confidant (pl. mutawassilīn).
