ड ḍa: The twelfth letter of the Urdū or Hindūstānīalphabet, and the thirteenth consonant of the Nāgarīor Hindi,—the third letter of the ṭa-vargor cerebral class.. It has no corresponding sound or character in the Arabic and Persian, nor indeed in any European language.. It has something of the sound of the English din drum; but is properly pronounced by turning back the tongue and pressing the tip of its under surface against the palate. In Hindīthis letter is frequently (when not at the beginning of a syllable) changed into hard r (ṛ):—ḍa-kār, s.m. The letter or sound ḍ.
