डोम ḍom[S. डोमः; डोम्बः], s.m. A low caste of Hindūs (they make ropes, mats, baskets, fans, etc. etc., and are employed in removing carcases, filth, etc., and about burial and burning grounds: they are also tumblers and merry-andrews; and withal are great thieves: thus it will be seen that, besides the name, they have much in common with the gipsies or 'Rom');—a caste of Mohammedans (perhaps converts from the Hindū ḍoms), the males of which are musicians, and their women singers, dancers and actresses (but they sing and dance etc. in the presence of women only);—an individual of the ḍomcaste.
