छांटना ćhāṅṭnā[ćhāṅṭ˚= Prk. छट्ट(इ)? fr. S. त्वƴ, rt. त्वक्ष् ], v.t. To cut, clip, pare, crop, lop, prune, trim, dress; to cut off, cut clean through; to cut up (an army, etc.); to knock off; to cut out (clothes); to cut down, reduce, retrench (allowances, expenses, etc.); to abbreviate, abridge, curtail;—to pick, pick out, cull, select, sort, to separate the husk from grain (by pounding it in a mortar), to husk; to sift; to remove (dirt, straws, etc. by some light and smart process); to wash (clothes) slightly (without boiling them); to clean, clear (of weeds, etc.);—to reject;—to discuss (rumour, news, etc.); to chop (words, politics, etc.):—ćhāṅt-lenā, v.t. (intens.) To cut off; to cut out; to cut up, etc.; also=ćhāṅṭnā.
