چوٹی

चोटी ćoṭī, [S. चूडor चोड+इका], s.f. A lock of hair left on the top of the head (the rest being shaven off); the hair braided or plaited and hung down behind, a cue; a coil (of hair), a top-knot; an ornament worn on the head (by women); crest (of a bird); top, summit, acme; peak (of a mountain); pinnacle; apex, vertex; the part by which a balance is suspended:—ćoṭīāsmān-par ghisnā, 'To rub the top of the head against the sky'; to be very vain; to be very aspiring or ambitious:—ćoṭī-dār, adj. Having a ćoṭī; having a crest, crested; having a peak; pointed, tapering:—ćoṭī-rakhnā, To retain a lock of hair on the top of the head (as a votive offering, etc.);—to overcharge:—ćoṭī-kā, adj. (f. -ī), The highest, the best, the most excellent, the acme of, the pith or essence of (e.g. ćoṭī-kībāt):—ćoṭī-kāhonā, v.n. To excel, be preeminent or unrivalled, etc.:—ćoṭī-kaṭ, s.m. lit. 'One whose ćoṭīis cut off'; one under control or subjection, a slave:—ćoṭīkaṭwānā, To have the ćoṭīcut off; to be under subjection, to be obedient, to be a slave:—ćoṭīkarnā, ćoṭīgūṅdhnā, To braid or plait the hair:—ćoṭī-wālā, adj. & s.m. (f. -ī), Having a ćoṭī, etc. (=ćoṭī-dār);—one who has a ćoṭī;—a ghost, an evil spirit, goblin:—ćoṭī(kisī-kī) hāth-meṅ ānā, v.n. To get hold of (one's) cue or top-knot to get (one) into one's power, to have power over one, to subdue.
