نحُس in arabic is ضُرّ which is the state achieved when one suffers loss in wealth or in health due to physical harm. In a nutshell, it’s meaning is ‘to suffer damage’ and when you suffer damage then you are regarded as ‘being unlucky’. That’s why it is translated as ‘ to be unlucky ‘.
