marūf, vulg. mārūf (pass. part. of عرف 'to know'), part. adj. Known, well-known; famous, noted, celebrated, notorious;—(in Gram.) active (voice);—s.m. The active voice (of a verb);—(in Alg.) a known quantity;—the letters وand ي are said to be marūfwhen the former has the sound of ūin nūr, and the latter that of īin pīr.
