मत्ंय matsya, s.m. (f. -ī), A fish (syn. maććhī);—name of the first of the ten incarnations or manifestations of Vishṇu (see Williams' Sanskrit Dict., s.v. matsya);—name of one of the Purāṇas; and of a country (Dinājpur and Rangpur) enumerated among the midland divisions of India:—matsyāvatār (˚ya+av˚), s.m. 'Fish-descent,' name of the first incarnation of Vishṇu:—matsya-rāj, s.m. 'Fishking,' the rohū, Cyprinus rohita;—the country called Matsya (see above).
