मागध māgadh, adj. & s.m. Relating or belonging to the province of Magadh;—a native or an inhabitant of Magadh;—name of a mixed caste (still numerous in Gujarāt, and called Bhāṭs; they are said to have sprung from a Vaiśya father and Kshatriya mother); an individual of that caste; the poetical panegyrist of a king, a bard, minstrel, rhapsodist (whose duty it is to recite the praises of sovereigns, their genealogy, and the deeds of their ancestors; and to attend on the march of an army, and animate the soldiers by martial songs;—syn. bhāṭ, karkhait).
