करना karnā[kar˚= Prk. कर(इ)=S. करो(ित), Vedic also कर(ित), rt. कृ], v.t. To do, act, perform, practise, execute, transact (business), conduct; to hold (a court, e.g. kaćahrīkarnā); to keep, to open (a shop); to set; to set up; to achieve, effect, accomplish; to commit (a crime); to administer; to engage in; to work (a sum, etc.); to use, ply, wield (a sword, etc.); to make, form, frame; to appoint; to devise, contrive; to apply; to exert; to avail; to impart, confer, bestow (e.g. 'izzat karnā); to render, to cause to be or become, to turn or change (into); to prepare, do, dress (the hair, or food, etc.); to kill (an animal, for use, e.g. bakrīkīhai), to effect, work upon, influence, bring under (one's) influence or subjection (in this sense kar-denāis more common); to put (in, -meṅ), to insert; to thrust, thrust in, pierce; to put on, wear (e.g. dhotīkarnā); to take (in marriage); to cohabit with, coire; to cry or call out, raise a cry of: (karnā, annexed to participles, adjectives, and substantives, forms whatthe grammarians call Nominal verbs, e.g. dūshit karnā, 'to make disgraced,' 'to vitiate'; ćaurākarnā, 'to make wide,' 'to widen';ḵẖiyāl karnā, 'to think, fancy,' etc.;—karnā, following a verb. n. or gerund in the form of an uninflected perfect part., forms a Frequentative or Continuative compound, e.g. likhākarnā, 'to write frequently,' 'to continue or keep on writing,' 'to be in the habit of writing';—the conj. part., as well as the root, kar, prefixed to certain verbs, forms intensives, or completives, etc., examples of which will be found in what follows)—kar-ānā, v.n.
