’alī(v.n. fr. علو 'to be high,' etc.), adj. High (in rank, etc.), eminent, noble;—s.m. The name of Moḥammad's son-in-law (he was, according to the Sunnīsect, the fourth Khalīfa or successor of Moḥammad; but the Shī’as make him the direct successor, not acknowledging the three other Caliphs); a proper name:—’alī-band, s.m. ‘alī's tie'; an amulet or charm (against sorceries or enchantments); an ornament, a jewel:—’alī-dhat, adj. (colloq.) Gigantic, monstrous:—’alī-kīkamān, 'The bow of ‘alī,' the rainbow:—’alī-madad, s.f. 'Alī's help'; a return salutation;—name of a trick in wrestling.
