sunnī(rel. n. fr. سنّ ), adj. & s.m. Lawful;—an orthodox Moḥammadan, one who receives the sunnat or traditionary portion of Moḥammadan law; one who reveres equally the four successors of Moḥammad (hence, also called ćahār-yārī. The Turks are Sunnīs; the Persians are Shī`as, q.v.).
