ऋिष r̤ishi, s.m. A singer or author of sacred hymns, an inspired poet or sage, a seer, a bard; a pious person, saint, saint-sage, an anchorite;—a Veda or sacred composition: (the Rishisare seven in number, viz. Kutsa, Atri, Rebha, Agastya, Kuśika, Vasishṭha, and Vyaśva; they constitute a peculiar class of beings in the early mythical system, as distinct from gods, men, Asurs, etc.;—they form, in Astronomy, the constellation of the Great Bear; and the term r̤ishiis also applied to the seventh asterism of the same constellation; the Rishis, in the later sense of 'saints,' or 'anchorites,' are divided into several orders, as Devarshi, Maharshi, Rājarshi, etc.; in Hindīpoetry the word r̤ishiis a symbol for seven):—r̤ishi-patnī, s.f. The wife of a Rishi:—r̤ishi-rā`ī, s.m. 'Lord of the stars of the Great Bear,' an epithet of the moon:—r̤ishi-r̤iṇ, s.m. An obligation owing to the Rishis, i.e. the study of the Vedas:—r̤ishikanyā, s.f. The daughter of a Rishi; an epithet of Sītā:—r̤ishi-muni, s.m.=r̤ishi, or muni:—r̤ishināri, s.f. Wife of a Rishi:—r̤ishi-nāyak, s.m.=r̤ishīśvar:—r̤ishīsā, r̤ishīś, r̤ishīśvar (˚shi+īs˚), s.m. 'Lord or chief of the Rishis,' an epithet of any one of the four sons of Brahmā.
