रावण rāvaṇ, s.m. lit. 'The Vociferator'; name of the ruler of Lankāor Ceylon, and the famous chief of the Rākshasas or demons whose subjugation and destruction by Rāmćandra, the seventh incarnation of Vishṇu, form the subject of the epic poem called Rāmāyaṇ, (he was the son of Viśravas by Kaikasī, and the half-brother of Kuvera).
