अवतार avatār, and H. औतार autār (rt. तॄ with अव), s.m. Descent (especially of a deity from heaven), appearance of any deity upon earth; incarnation (more particularly of Vishṇu in ten principal forms, viz. 1˚Matsya, 'the fish'; 2˚Kaććhapa, 'the tortoise'; 3˚Varāha, 'the boar'; 4˚Nr̤i-singha, 'the man-lion'; 5˚Vāmana, 'the dwarf'; 6˚Paraśu-rāma; 7˚Rāma; 8˚Balarāma, or Kr̤ishna; 9˚Buddhā; 10˚Kalkī);—any new and unexpected appearance or phenomenon; any pious or distinguished person (in the language of respect or flattery); a wicked, depraved or quarrelsome person (ironically);—crossing (=utār); translation; a tīrth or sacred place of Hindūpilgrimage:—autār dhārnā, autār lenā, v.n. To become incarnate, to appear in the world (a deity).
