अƴ ashṭa, adj. Eight (=H. āṭh):—ashṭāng (S. ashṭan+anga), s.m. Eight parts of the body with which very profound obeisance is performed (viz. the hands, thighs, breast, eyes, and forehead);—adj. With, or consisting of, eight members or parts:—ashṭāng-praṇām (ashṭāng-parnām), s.m. Prostration in adoration or salutation by which the ground is touched with the eight principal parts of the body:—ashṭa-bhujī, adj. Possessed of, or having, eight arms:—ashṭa-prahar (=āṭhoṅpahar), ashṭa-jām, adv. Through the eight watches, night and day, always, incessantly:—ashṭa-dhātu, s.m. The eight metals; bell-metal, mixed metal (=azhdhāt):—ashṭa-dhātī, s.m. Anything consisting of a combination of the eight metals:—ashṭa-dhātīja, ashṭa-dhāvī, s.f. A compound of the eight metals, etc. (=ashṭadhātu):—ashṭa-siddhi, s.m. The eight siddhis or superior beings, personifications of the powers and laws of nature: (when those powers are subjected to the will by holiness and austerity, whatever the fancy desires may, it is said, be obtained; even universal sovereignty may be acquired and implicit obedience to any command enforced; the magnitude or weight of the body may be increased or diminished at will, or the body transferred in an instant to any part of the universe):—ashṭa-lok, s.m. The eight worlds:—ashṭa-lok-pāl, s.m. Lord of the eight worlds:—ashṭa-mangal, s.m. A norse with a white face, tail, breast, and hoofs; a collection of eight lucky things to be assembled on certain occasions (as a lion, a bull, an elephant, a water-jar, a fan, a flag, a trumpet and a lamp; or a Brahman, a cow, fire, gold, ghee, the sun, water, and a king).
