आॐम āsram[S. आौम], s.m. Abode, residence; the abode of a hermit, or of a religious student; hermitage; college, school;—a class or religious order (of which the Hindūs reckon four, referable to the different periods of a Brāhman's life, viz. 1˚The Brahmāćārī, who devotes his life to religious exercises, aūsterity, and celibacy; 2˚The Gr̤ihīor Gr̤ihastha, who lives in the world and rears a family; 3˚The Vānaprastha, who retires from the world with his family and passes his life in devotion in the forest; 4˚The Bhikshuor Sannyasī, who subsists on alms).
